“If you can earn the trust of a horse you have gained a friend for life.”

Spice is a coming 5 yr old QH/Paint cross mare that we purchased from the Westlock auction in September 2023 along with her friend Sugar. We had originally only purchased Sugar at the time, however when we went to pick her up we saw how bonded she and Spice were and couldn’t fathom the idea of separating them. We therefore offered to purchase Spice as well so that we could keep these best friends together.

Spice was quite timid and unhandled and in dire need of proper nutrition. And little did we know at the time, also pregnant! She has since foaled out a beautiful baby boy, her first, and is now being allotted some much needed rest and bonding time with her new baby.

Over the last few months Spice has slowly been learning how to be haltered and handled from the ground. She is curious and open, yet it still takes her a while to trust new people around her.

We look forward to posting updates of her progress over the next year and eventually being able to place her up for adoption.

I mean, have you ever see anything so darn cute? Baby Oliver was born on March 31, 2024 at our sanctuary in Ardrossan. He came out strong, healthy and ready to SLAY the DAY! He is currently bonding with mom, learning just how fast he is capable of running, and giving everyone much needed laughter and joy on a regular basis.

He currently spends his days snoring away in his mama’s pile of hay, testing out the strength of our fencing, and putting absolutely everything he can find into his mouth. He is incredibly intelligent, bolt, sassy and oh-so-special!

Unfortunately, due to his age, he will not be ready for adoption just yet. But stay tuned and follow us on social media for more Oliver updates and shenanigans!

Pickles is believed to be approximately 2 years old. He came in via another rescue after being found abandoned on a highway. He came to us very distrusting and shy but has since settled in nicely and gained some confidence both in himself and in us. He has had his first trims and handles the farrier like a gentleman. He is also currently learning how to be caught and worked with by our many volunteers and trainers. Once he has your trust, he is your best friend and loves to follow you around his pen and pasture. We think he would make an excellent little driving pony or a best friend to any little boy or girl looking for a pony pal!

Bonded Pair - Kat & Piper

Though Kat and Piper arrived at our sanctuary 4 years apart, they are currently thick as thieves and the best of friends. As a result we have made them a promise to do whatever is in our power to ensure that they remain together. While we recognize that this may cause difficulty, as both girls currently have very unique needs, we are determined to ensure that they maintain their friendship until their final days.

Kat is approximately 9 years old. She was an SPCA seizure case from a breeding farm in Southern, AB. She was unhandled, fearful, emaciated, pregnant, and nursing a 3 week old filly at her side when she came to us in 2020. She also struggles with asthma and respiratory issues that we are currently diagnosing and therefore requires a strict diet and regular medication. She will most likely never make a riding horse, however she thrives at liberty work and absolutely loves being apart of our therapeutic herd.

Piper is approximately 10 years old and was a severe abuse case that we took on in the Spring of 2023. She is currently learning to build trust with multiple people as we get her used to handling daily tasks such as haltering, barn visits, farrier trims and so much more. She has the potential to make someone a really good pony once she is given the opportunity to build a strong bond and friendship with them.

We hope to find a forever home that is willing to take them both on or work with us to ensure that they remain together.

Permanent Residents

Whiz

Whiz is a 26 yr old QH retired reining mare. She spent the majority of her life competing and carrying people of all ages and sizes on her back. She was surrendered to us in the Fall of 2021 and it is here where she will enjoy her retirement and the remainder of her days.

As she is a senior with a significant heart murmur, she is considered one of our high maintenance residents. She requires extra feed and supplements to help maintain her weight along with medication to support her cushing’s diagnosis and severe heart murmur. Quest

All we were told was that he was a paint stud pony that was being surrendered and needed to be gelded. We had no idea the severity of his condition until we showed up to load him.

We expected him to be thin (which he was) but we did not expect a severe neurological condition. And though he did come to us carrying a strep bacterium that developed into pneumonia, Quest has since fully recovered and is on his way to be integrated into our gelding herd soon. He was castrated in June, has received a solid trim and a full round of vaccinations and deworming and is receiving consistently handling and training.

Unfortunately Quest has been diagnosed with Wobblers Syndrome, which is a significant neurological condition that affects his gate and his balance. Though he is safe on the ground to handle, he will never be a safe riding horse and is therefore being offered permanent residency here at our rescue.

Winnie

Sweet Winnie is approximately 12 years old and is the most gentlest of souls. Due to her severe neglect she developed infections in both her eyes and was left 100% blind. but she doesn’t let that stop her! She’s the first to nicker at you when she can hear you coming and though she may bump into a few things here and there, she never misses a single opportunity to keep moving forward! As she is a permanent resident here at PARF, she is currently available for sponsorship while we do our best to get her body and her feet back in shape.

Cache’s People!

“We run an equine therapeutic program where we partner with horses to focus on mental health and wellness called TriUnity Equine. This past year we were ready to add another horse to our herd and contacted the Parsons Animal Rescue Foundation to see if there were any options available to us. Dayna selected a horse, Cache, for us that in her experience had amazing ability showing up in a genuine way when working with people. She felt he had a gift for our programs and encouraged us to come out and meet him. We came and fell in love instantly, as his sweet heart and goofy personality were exactly what we were looking for. It took us a few months to be ready to bring him home but Dayna and her team were patient and helpful throughout the whole process. She will definitely be our first call when we are ready for our herd to grow again and would highly recommend PARF to anyone looking to support a horse in need”
